ARTIST CHECK: BIG L

Lamont Coleman (May 30, 1974 - February 15, 1999), better known as Big L, was an American rapper. Big L was born, raised, lived, and was fatally shot in the same New York City neighborhood, Harlem, about which he frequently rhymed. He is mostly remembered for his freestyling, storytelling, punchlines, his critically acclaimed debut album Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous, and his murder at the age of twenty-four.

In 1993 he signed with Columbia Records and released one vinyl 12", "Devil's Son". This song was quickly banned from radio because of its horrorcore lyrics which stations dubbed too violent or vulgar, such as "I pistol whip the priest every Sunday". In 1995, still with Columbia, he released his debut album Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous. The album was hardly promoted and commercially not very popular, but was praised by The Source, a respected rap-music publication, which gave it four mics out of five. The album featured rappers such as Jay-Z and Cam'ron, but after its lack of success, he was dropped from the label.

His career took-off with a group called Children of the Corn, which he formed with fellow Harlemites Mase (under the name Murda Mase), Cam'ron (as Killa Cam), Cam'ron's cousin Bloodshed, and McGruff. The group recorded numerous songs, enough to make a full length album, compiled later as The Collector's Edition. The group never signed a deal, as Bloodshed was killed in a car accident in Harlem in 1997 and Mase and Cam'ron temporarily quit rapping to pursue professional basketball careers.

From 1997 to 1999, Big L worked on his second album The Big Picture. It was released worldwide at the summer of 2000 to critical acclaim. Two singles, entitled "Ebonics" and "Flamboyant", both reached number one in the charts. The album featured cameos from Fat Joe, Tupac Shakur, and Big Daddy Kane amongst other rappers. The Big Picture went platinum in 2001.

Jay-Z has said that Big L was set to sign with his Roc-A-Fella label, but died the week before. The two had a mutual respect dating back to a dual freestyle session on the radio and Jay-Z's appearance on Big L's first album.

Now for the goodness.

MICHAEL MIXXIN MOORE MILITANT MASTER MIX

New podcast is up of Michael Mixxin Moore. Passed away April 2006. Moore held down the LA scene for more than two decades as an activist and pioneering dj, hosting mixshows on the original 1580 KDAY and countless networks to follow. A cardiac arrest took Moore's life tragically last April and these politically charged early 90s radio mixes from KCRW 89.9 remain as a testament to his legacy. I actually remember recording some of his mixes on tape when I was a kid. This is one that I found on the net.

Now click the link on the left side of the screen. Listen to it or if you want it just subscribe to the podcast. NOW!!!!

Nike Air Trainer TWII X Supreme

I'm pretty much burnt from the whole collecting kicks phase in my life but these look damn good to me. From Supreme.

In 1988 the Nike Air Trainer TW was introduced through the Nike Air Trainer SC program. The Air Trainer TW was designed to be the lighter weight, low cut version of the Air Trainer SC. The Air Trainer TWII was released in 1989. During the 1980's and 90's Bo Jackson was the leading spokes person for the Air Trainer program.

For the first time the Nike Air Trainer TWII will be re-issued through Nike SB. Supreme has designed the Air Trainer TWII in four new colorways.

A baseball jacket was produced to correlate with the sneaker release. The jacket will be available in three colorways.

Available November 8th at Supreme NY and LA stores.
Available November 9th at Supreme Japan stores.

GHOSTFACE LEAVING?

From MTV News:
"I'm not [mad at] all the members. It's not based on the members, but the hierarchy at Wu-Tang Clan is on some bullshit. They trying to fuck around and make me push my album back and doing all this. But niggas ain't fucking around or give us money when we did them Wu-Tang tours. The first one, they paid us after a while, but this last one, niggas is holding onto a lot of money. And [they're] upset based on that. It's a battle right now."

Damn. Read more at Pitchfork.

ARTIST CHECK: FREESTYLE FELLOWSHIP

Freestyle Fellowship are a rap group from Los Angeles consisting of rappers Aceyalone, Mikah 9, P.E.A.C.E., Self Jupiter and producer J Sumbi. Their vocal techniques focusing on the method of the freestyle, as well as a successful infusion of hip hop and jazz established the group as forerunners in the sub-genre of jazz rap, and also placed them amongst prominent West Coast underground hip hop acts of the early 1990s like Hieroglyphics, Abstract Rude & Tribe Unique, and The Pharcyde.

The group was formed at the Good Life Cafe in LA during the early to mid 90s. Originally they were just a group of friends that met up at the Good Life's open mic sessions. The original Freestyle Fellowship consisted of over 50 members. The Emcees known as Freestyle Fellowship were the members that consistently came to the most open mic sessions.

Officially forming in 1991 and releasing the underground track To Whom It May Concern, the Fellowship became known in tape-trading circles, identified by their range in rhyming, at times bordering on scat, and Afrocentric messages over jazz inspired beat production. Their 1993 release, Innercity Griots is acknowledged by many to be among the best hip hop albums of the 90s.

ARTIST CHECK: KOOL G RAP

Nathaniel Wilson (born July 20, 1968), known by stage name Kool G Rap, is an American hardcore rapper from the Corona section of Queens, New York. He began his career with the Juice Crew in the 1980s but achieved little commercial success.

Wilson began working with DJ Polo in 1986, releasing several underground hit singles including "It's a Demo"/"I'm Fly". Two other singles, "Streets of New York" and "Road to the Riches" (which borrows a sample from Billy Joel's "Stiletto), received heavy rotation on Yo! MTV Raps and cemented his reputation as one of New York's top lyrical auteurs. His talent for telling a compelling, hard-luck story in a single song was considered second to only that of Rakim. While Wilson grew in popularity, he never crossed over like Biz Markie or Big Daddy Kane, both also members of the Juice Crew.

Kool G Rap's upcoming album, titled Half A Klip, will be released on the Koch Entertainment-distributed labels Chinga Chang Records and Latchkey Recordings on October 23rd 2007 worldwide. Half A Klip features production by DJ Premier. The first single by Kool G Rap is titled "What's More Realer Than That" (produced by Marks) followed by "Risin Up" produced by Domingo. The Queens-bred rapper inked a deal with Chinga Chang Records in December 2005. Sources told AllHipHop.com. In 2007, he appeared alongside Big Daddy Kane on the track "Next Up" from the album Underground Kingz by UGK.

Some video goodness.

Fast Life feat. Nas (Kool G Rap Spitting on Surface's joint "Happy". What you know about that???)

Streets of New York

Ill Street Blues (this is the only piece of vinyl that I got almost 12 copies now and still looking for more. My top hip hop joint ever.)

===================================
SPECIAL NOTE: FROM THE EVIL MONITO STAFF

Hello Dear Friends.
It has been SIX years since the concept of Evil Monito was conjured and born. What started out as an online magazine (www.evilmonito.com) in January 2001 in the college dorm room of Rickey Kim, has now come into fruition as a new company in the whole. Evil Monito Agency will officially open its doors for business on Friday - October 12, 2007. We would like to invite you all to celebrate with us in this joyous occasion. We will also be debuting our project with Kangol, continuing our New York celebration we had last week, which had a tremendous turnout.

We encourage those who RSVP - rsvp@evilmonito.com - to also submit a child photo jpeg of themselves to build on the theme of "heritage." In a time and age where gatherings are far too often contrived and where true connections are hard to come by, we hope this opening will set a new precedent of gathering for the City of Los Angeles. On this particular night, we have an opportunity to take in a live performance by Capitol Recording Artist - CJ, a young 19 yr old singer that channels the tones and sentiments of Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. Music ambiance will be provided by DJSTYLE (Unknown Document), Gomez Warren IV, and BAM (Hellz Bellz). All three DJs are dear friends of Evil Monito and we would like to highlight their amazing talent of music selection for our esteemed guests. Beverages will be provided by 10 Cane Rum (serving Evil Mojitos), Vitamin Water, and Tiger Beer. We will also open our main showroom space where Klipsch Audio's state-of-the-art sound system will accompany a slide show presentation to further commemorate the Evil Monito x Kangol project.

All in all, we sincerely look forward to seeing you this Friday - Oct 12.
Once again, we thank you for all your generous support throughout all these years. We look forward to sharing a toast with us!

Sincere Thanks,
Evil Monito Staff
