REGGAE: MP3'S THE NEW 45?

Got this from the We Maniac blog. I actually had a conversation about this with somebody last week. Peep.

Heart and soul of the vibrating reggae music culture always have been the 7" 45rpm singles. But times are changing fast. The output of Jamaican music is so high that producers give it out as promo cd to djs and radiostations. From here the songs make their way to the filesharing networks. That's where the music fans get it from. By the time the official record is out, the hardcore-fan already heard it too often and has newer stuff in the player. Most DJs and reggae soundsystems already switched to cd players. Only in Europe you still might find the traditional medium. How will the change of the medium change the music? The circle how we see it at the moment, is not very satisfying for producers and artist. Of course they have more promotion options, but still no income - even if the song is a club hit. A big chance might be legal mp3s. Europe's biggest reggae distributor, Soundquake, just launched a mp3-Store. Now the reggae market has a chance, to be on time and make some money.

For now just grab the 45's hit up Deadly Dragon Sound. They got the tunes seperated by sub genres. If you want some war tunes they got them. If you want some gun tunes they got them. Peep.

DA KING & I - CONTEMPORARY JEEP MUSIC

Found this on Real Hip Hop Bootleggers. Da King & I is a group that really separates cats who think they know the classics and cats who really do know the classics. Classics ain't just about Pete Rock & CL Smooth, ATCQ, Blacksheep and all the other easy joints that people be playing. I see a lot of dj's around the way just constantly faking that they know whats up. Even some old cats don't get too deep on the classic hip hop. Maybe they'll do some Juice Crew or BDP type joints but still some new cats and old cats just aren't really getting in deep on what the 90's era really was. I just wanna hear a cat play some Rough House Survivors, Original Flavor, Troubleneck Brothers, Hard 2 Obtain, Nowborn Click, Mad Kap, King Just, Nine, Doo Wop, Gemini the Gifted One, and of course Da King & I.

Last issue is at the end of the month. I thought it was pretty informative. They put a face to songs where I actually thought "who the fuck would make a beat like this?". I'd then read the mag and come up with "so this dood right here made that wack ass beat? wow."

Artist Check. Poor Righteous Teachers

Poor Righteous Teachers are a Hip Hop group from Trenton, New Jersey, founded in 1989. Often referred to as PRT by their fans, Poor Righteous Teachers are known as pro-Black conscious hip hop artists, with musical content inspired by the teachings of the Nation of Gods and Earths. Wise Intelligent, as the lead MC, is the most visible and well known member of the group. Culture Freedom provides backing vocals and production and Father Shaheed serves as a DJ and producer.

PRT debuted in 1989 with the release of the single "Time to Say Peace" b/w "Butt Naked Booty Bless". The trio released their first album, Holy Intellect, in 1990, amidst a number of similarly pro-Black, Islam-inspired albums such as Public Enemy's Fear of a Black Planet, X-Clan's To the East, Blackwards and Brand Nubian's One For All. While not as commercially successful as these albums, Holy Intellect received critical acclaim, and spawned the group's only major radio hit, "Rock Dis Funky Joint". PRT returned in 1991 with their second album, Pure Poverty. The album was not as commercially successful than their debut, and was not as acclaimed. The lead single "Shakiyla (JRH)", became a minor rap hit that year. Their third, and possibly most successful release to date, Black Business, was released in 1993. Sales were once again limited, but the album was a critical success. The album's lead single, "Nobody Move", received little radio airplay. Wise Intelligent released his first solo album, Killin' U for Fun, in early 1996, and was met with mixed reviews and no significant amount of sales, failing to reach any Billboard album chart. After a three-year hiatus, PRT returned as a group in 1996 with their fourth album, The New World Order. Released in a new Hip Hop era, the album received little attention, failing to reach the Billboard 200 album chart. The album's lead single, "Word Iz Life", was barely able to reach the Hot Rap Singles chart, peaking at the chart's lowest position, #50. Despite the lack of significant attention, the album, like their past releases, received significant acclaim. The group didn't return until 2001, when they dropped the rare underground release Declaration of Independence.

Easy Star.
